Meeting Minutes
May 26, 2011
   4 :00 p.m. - City Hall

Members Present: Cindy Ahrens, Bonnie Gutzwiller, Julie Olson, Jill Healy, Barb Reitmeyer, Mary Iverson, Mark Casey (City), Carla Asfeld (Librarian), Brandi Canter (GRRL). Members Absent: Joelle Arlt

Review of Agenda: Added: Nominating Committee for 2012 members

Secretary’s Report: Minutes from May 13, 2010 read and accepted as published.

City Report: Mark Casey, no report

Librarian’s Report: Brandi Canter, Regional Supervisor for GRRL distributed handouts (attached to original) and spoke to the omnibus tax bill which included a two year suspension of Maintenance of Effort, the statute that requires cities and counties to maintain consistent and adequate funding of libraries.  Governor Dayton vetoed on May 24th.  Special Session scheduled.

Brandi addressed Maintenance of Effort, which guarantees consistent funding for libraries, Legacy Funding Minitex and MnLINK, and the passing of bill HF844, which provided the appointment of a public library representative to serve as an adviser to the Governor’s Workforce Development Council.

Brandi also provided the Board with phone numbers and email addresses for the House and Senate Conferees. 

Carla reviewed the past year library purchases and events:

- 4 new chairs in use, paid for by the FOL and Annandale Improvement Club.
- 2 new additional Internet stations installed.
- DVD’s moved closer to circulation desk to help prevent theft.
- Legacy Funding: Annandale received a total of $5500, which was spent on various programs and performers from August 2010 through June 2011.  (Spreadsheet attached)  
- Summer Reading Program: Those readers that finished the program received board books, rubber duckies, water blasters, flying frogs, or USB memory sticks, depending on the age group.
- Winter Reading Program:  121 patrons signed up and entered a drawing for MP3 players, mugs, book bags and a regional prize of a Nook.  This program tracked 860 books.
- Summer Story Time - Annandale resident Jennifer Moe will provide 6 story times.  Annandale FOL will pay Jennifer’s stipend.
- Staff Changes:  Janis Fossen retired and Jolene Forsberg is staffing her hours.  Dawn Grossinger resigned and Carolyn Rickenberger is staffing her hours.
- Inventory - 13 volunteers put in a total of 43 hours and located over 15,000 items.
- High $5 Campaign, total received by GRRL was $18,184.10.  $100 will be given to Annandale.
- New Policy - As of June 1, 2011 GRRL staff will no longer be able to handle FOL or Improvement Club monies.  A lock box will need to be provided for any money exchange.  Petty cash no longer available, reimbursements will be provided by GRRL.  Brandi explained that this change was required after GRRL’s yearly audit and had nothing to do with GRRL staff issues.

Carla shared with us the new Doug Ohman book on libraries; Annandale is one of the featured libraries.

Friends of the Library Report: Bonnie reported that the May 20th Author Dinner with Julie Kramer was a success with approximately 110 guests.

Book Sale donations will be taken at the Library starting the 1st of June.  The Book Sale is July 2nd, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The next Friends’ meeting will be June 7th, 7 p.m. at the Library.

Publicity Committee: Ron Remington, Cindy Ahrens, Bonnie Gutzwiller and Dean Cheney met May 23rd.  The 1/4 page ad will appear in the Advocate on May 31st.
