Library Board Minutes
September 4, 2008

Members Present: Cindy Ahrens, Joelle Artl, Bonnie Gutzwiller, Julie Olson, Julie Sedey, Karen Spiegeler, Mark Casey (City), Sandy Otto (Librarian), Dawn Schaefer Stumpf (Programming) and Joan Allen (GRRL).  Members absent: Idell Knudsvig

Review of the Agenda:  There were no additions.

Secretarys Report: Motion MSP (Julie O., Bonnie) to approve the minutes.

Financial Report:  Mark reported the balance remains at $1314.91.

Programming Report:  (Full report in the secretarys book) Dawn reported that the reading programs are on the school calendar. They will be on the third Saturday of each month from 10-10:30.  She would like a sandwich board to have outside on Saturday events. It is planned to have different community members come and read their favorite childrens book.  Community members could be the librarian, policeman, dentist, principal or postal worker.

Art Committee:  Julie O. reported that the art inventory for insurance purposes is done.  There is an old Minnesota map that could go in the non-fiction area of the library. The consensus is that this committee can be dropped from the agenda.  Dawn will contact art teachers when needed.

Librarians Report:  (May-August-full report in secretarys book) Sandy reported that Mr. Atkinsons fourth grade class gave $100 to the library from the sale of ice cream cups after lunch.  The Annandale Library Board sponsored an art contest for all schools with the summer reading theme, Whats Cookn At Your Library.  Eleven posters were hung on the library wall, $25 was awarded to one student from each school.  The Annandale FOL held their annual book sale and made $1600, approximately $500 from a sale on eBay of a first edition copy of Anne of Green Gables.  154 children started the summer reading program, with 54 finishing.  10 young adults stated the teen program and the handed in 136 reading slips.  She read, listened to and watched many movies and highly recommends the Indian film Water.  Sandy would like to have a picnic table outside the library for patrons.

Friends of the Library Report:  Bonnie reported that the book sale made $1600 and received $626 from the sale of two books on eBay.  95 People attended a loon program by Stan Tekiela. The author for the 2009 author event will be Lorna Landvik.  On September 24 there will be a free author event featuring Mike Lynch.  A grant was applied for from MN Book Award and $490 was given to help pay for this event.  The annual FOL meeting will be held in November.  The next FOL meeting will be Tuesday, September 16 at 7 pm in the library.

Publicity Committee:  Cindy reported that no publicity would be needed until next spring.

Unfinished Business:

40 students participated in the art contest this summer.  A completely blind judging system chose one winner from each school.  It was felt that artwork should be left up over the summer.  Also next year a certificate of participation should be given to the participants.

New Business:

Motion MSP (Julie O., Bonnie) to move the annual meeting to May 7, 2009 and cancel the January, 2009 meeting.

Full 2009 meeting schedule: May 7, Sept. 3 and Nov. 5.

The next meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at 4 pm.

MSP (Karen, Joelle) to adjourn.

Respectfully Submitted,
Julie Sedey, Secretary
