Meeting Minutes
November 1, 2007

Members Present: Ron Remington, Cindy Ahrens, Denise Safranek,

Julie Olson, Karen Spiegeler, Julie Sedey, Sandy Otto (Librarian), Joan Allen (GRRL) and Bonnie Gutzwillar (FOL) Members absent:  Mark Casey (City), Joelle Artl and Dawn Schaefer Stumpf (Programming)

Review of the Agenda: MSP (Denise, Ron) to approve agenda.

Secretarys Report: MSP (Julie O., Karen) to approve the minutes.

Financial Report: No report given.

Librarians Report: Sandy reported that 15 children & parents attended the Saturday, Oct. 3, story time, which featured Bill Martins stories.  Sixteen people volunteered 68.75 hours.  This included the week of door counts. Two lamps were purchased for the library from a $100 donation and FOL.  Sandy read the book Thunderhead by Doug Preston, listened to a book from Alexander McCall Smiths 2nd series Portuguese irregular verbs, Twain, and Murder on the Leviathan by Russian author B. Akunin.

GRRL Report:  Joan reported that GRRL would be having a campaign that will raise money for extra things for the new library.  The referendum only pays for the building.  Joan hopes to finally have an office with a window.  Completed policy on new/existing libraries will go before the GRRL Board later in November.  Elk River , Monticello , Buffalo and St. Cloud would like to have self-checkout units.  They are quite expensive and also require purchase of a maintenance contract at this time.  In the future they will probably become less expensive and easier to use.  Use of credit cards is being looked at for paying fines and copies.  GRRL needs to find a way to let the public know what services are available at the library, such as Central Search, which shows all the materials available on a particular subject.

Programming Report:  Dawn e-mailed that the story times are going very well.

Art Committee:  Dawn and Ron - Ron reported that the middle school art display in the library would go up next.

FOL Report:  Bonnie reported on the author event, which featured Stan Tekiela.  He spoke on the good points of birds that are not highly thought of, such as pigeons and crows.  The group would like to have him come in the summer to speak on loons.  The FOL meeting will be Nov. 13 at 6:30.  Treats will be served.

Publicity Committee - Cindy, Karen, Ron and Bonnie Gutzwiller - Cindy thanked the committee for their help and support.

Old Business:

Nominations:  Bonnie Gutzwiller and Idell Knudsvig are nominees to the Board.  There was no response from newspaper ad.  Officer nominations for 2008 are Cindy Ahrens, President, Julie Olson, Vice President and Julie Sedey, Secretary. It was proposed that we have candidates in September and that meetings would be in January, late April, September, and November for 2008.

New Business:

Conference Report:  Ron recommended that everyone go to a MLA Conference.  The main speakers were great and the genealogy session he attended was excellent.  He went to Cindy and Chris Olsons presentation on advocacy, which is not just talking to the legislative members about library issues, but also coming and using the library and talking about it to people.  The National Library Conference is March 25-29, 2008 in Minneapolis .  Cindy reported on regional archives for genealogy searches, a Friends idea exchange, having an Antique Road Show in the community for a fundraiser, adult spelling bee and essay contests for students with money awards.  At the conference she introduced Elizabeth Cabelka, who spoke on successful capital building programs for new libraries.  The board was thanked for helping fund some of their conference expenses.

The next meeting will be Jan. 3, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
MSP (Julie O., Karen) to adjourn.

Respectfully Submitted,
Julie Sedey, Secretary
