Annandale Improvement Club
Annual Report
1993-1995

Ruth Homuth: President, 1993-95

This report is summarization of our goals and activities during the two years of my being your President.

In setting my goals, for the club when I began as your President in 1993, I not only wanted to focus the Clubs sights on our Centennial year in 3 years, which would be looking at our past, but also looking to where we are going in the future.

My first goal was the appointment of a club historian who would gather memorabilia from members and continue updating the history in anticipation of our 100th birthday of the club in 1998.  This was accomplished by Sandy Otto kindly accepting this responsibility.

My second goal pertained to membership as membership is the vitality of the group.  Insuring continued growth for future success becomes so important as we near the second century of this organization.  Our programs attract members, but need to reiterate the importance in joining the Improvement Club is one way of serving the community.  I was able to let women in the community know through different avenues that we always welcome new members.  The first being a very well written featured article in the Annandale Advocate in 1993 and then our Women Thru the Ages Day at which time I was able to inform people about our club as well as invite women to become members.  We had printed programs available for people to take.  The publicity that we received for our Club from this one day Institute was very good through the Annandale Advocate, Buffalo Radio Station and Community Education publications.  In regard to this event, the consensus of opinion from members as a result of the evaluation forms was positive and many stated that an institute day similar to Women thru the Ages, but with changes should be done again next year.  However, when it was put up for a vote, it was voted down.  In these two years approximately ten women became new members, however, nearly that number resigned for various reasons.  This goal needs to be a continuous effort.

Number three goal was to establish a plan for some significant project to be finalized at our centennial year, that would be in accordance with the object of the club and beneficial to our club, city and community.  The project could be commemoration of the many women who have contributed in various ways to the improvement of the Annandale community in the almost 100 years of Clubs history.  I see a project of this nature serving the club in two ways, namely; fulfilling the clubs objective in improving city property or being beneficial to the city of Annandale, and secondly; giving us an incentive to continue our fund-raising efforts as well as serving the community.  Unless we have some goal to work toward, people lose interest and quit the club.  I feel this is an important issue to carefully consider if this organization is going to follow its objective for another 100 years.

This is due to many changes taking place in our society and work place today.  The early members of this club began the Library Association in 1898 and throughout the years worked hard in providing books, part-time librarian, and keeping up the building.  Improvement Club had our own library Board who managed the library.  Amongst the many fund-raisers for the library were our picking flowers every Friday evening in community gardens, than making and selling the floral arrangements in baskets on the street corner at Dayton s Furniture store every Saturday morning, rain or shine!!  But several years ago things changed, the Regional Library concept came into effect which everyone was very happy to see.  Now in this case we can actually see our taxes at work, benefiting the local community by providing books, taking care of librarians salary, and maintaining the building.  Because of this changed status of funding the library, financial needs have changed.  However, our support of the library will continue in whatever way is needed.

Therefore, my third goal was attained when the members at our last meeting approved financially participating in the furnishings of the lower level of the City Pavilion which has been rebuilt by the members of Annandale Lions Club for meeting rooms for organizations in Annandale .  Beverly Lindgren and myself, as a committee will follow-up by meeting with the Lions and city at an appropriate time and will report back to the club with more details either by June or next fall.

My challenge for the club, as my presidency comes to an end, is that we can now move into our Centennial year by not only being the benefactor for the library in the City of Annandale, but will have the opportunity to participate in another much needed projectboth being in commemoration of the many women who have and still are working for the improvement of the City.

I feel that we accomplished our overall objective of the Annandale Improvement Club these past two years by the varied excellent monthly programs as well as the one-day institute Women thru the Ages in serving the Annandale community by improving its property, educating its citizens, and providing social activity.  We are also reinstating our fund-raising project of selling Christmas wreaths again.

I want to thank you all for your cooperation and assistance in making my two years as President a challenging and rewarding experience.
