Annandale Improvement Club - Annual Secretarys Report - 1932
From The Annandale Advocate, April 14, 1932, page 1

Report of Improvement Club by Secretary

One of the first things that came up during the past Club year was the urgent invitation the club received to join the Womens Federated Clubs of Wright County .  A committee was appointed to investigate this matter and report.  On motion the club decided to remain as it is for the present.

A day was appointed to meet and clean the tourist park, we were to take our lunch, and our husbands were to join us for a picnic supper, the club furnishing the coffee.  We are sorry that this was not successful, very few attended.

The club gave prizes for flower and vegetable gardening.  This was interesting, by owing to the extremely hot, dry season, it was rather discouraging.  The prizes consisted of flower bulbs.

Mr. Stone supplied, free of charge, peonies for the Soo Line Park , he directed the planting of them.

The club had a clever float to join in the 4th of July celebration parade, which won second prize.

At a special meeting, we held a lively discussion in regard to putting on the play, West of Broadway, finally we decided to abandon the idea.  This was a wise move as neighboring towns attempted it and met with failure.

We put on a food sale, with Mrs. Dowler as chairman, which netted the club $27.90.

We sponsored the movie, Charlies Aunt with Esther Rochel as chairman.  This netted us $41.65.

In November the club served a banquet to the 4-H club of this community, our president acted as chairman of entire committee, this was a difficult undertaking, and it met with success.  It was served in the high school building, over one hundred and twenty-five people were served.  It netted the club $35.82.

The members of the club sold tickets for the benefit movie, which the village council sponsored.

The club decorated the large community Christmas tree, they also decorated the small growing tree on the rest room grounds.

The club sent baskets of food, fruit, candy and small gifts to needy families at Christmas time.

We had one of our rugs repaired, whish improves the appearance of the library.

We added many books to our library, and received several collections of free books from the State library.

And last but not least, on March 1, the club entertained the Womens Clubs of the county. Here were nine clubs invited, but owing to the bad snow storm on that day, only five clubs were represented, two from Buffalo , one each from Cokato, Maple Lake and South Haven.  There were about forty guests present.  Our program was on landscape gardening.  Mr. Sando of the University of Minnesota , our guest speaker, dealt with this subject very ably.  Lunch was served to about eighty people.  We felt this meeting had been very instructive.

In regard to the several programs for the year, we feel they have been very interesting and beneficial.

We had one program on Nature Study and one on Folk Songs.

We had one book review, Wild Life in Africa given by Mrs. Runquist.

A talk on Child Welfare given by Mrs. Bendix.

An interesting meeting on 4-H club work with 4-H club members present.  Several gave talks about their work.

The club gave a Christmas party, the program consisted of the reading of a Christmas play by Mrs. Ross Ives.

There was a program on the Authors of Minnesota which was enjoyed.

A George Washington program that was fine; also a program on Landscape Gardening with Mr. Sando of the U of M as speaker.

The hostesses for the past club year are each to be congratulated.  We wish to thank them for the fine lunches, which they served.

The financial condition of our club is as follows:

Balance on hand April 1, 1931---$73.94
Taken in during year -----166.06
Total------------------------240.00
Paid out during the year 94.82
Balance on hand, April 1, 1932----145.18

We feel that we have spent a pleasant, profitable year, and wish to thank our president for carrying on so capably, and the members for standing by and assisting so willingly.

Mrs. Grace Hill, Secretary
